The description of this story sounds like a thriller — like something out of a Twilight Zone episode — nine young Russian college students, experienced mountain climbers, go on an expedition in 1959 in the middle of winter to climb a mountain in Siberia. They never come back. Eventually their bodies are found, half dressed and shoeless despite 25 below weather, in different places and with strange injuries — some look as if they have been beaten, some face down in the snow, others in fetal positions, some wrapped in each other’s arms. One young girl is missing her tongue. Their tent was found, with everything inside neatly laid out for dinner that evening and clothing and shoes drying out for the next morning’s hike to the top of the mountain, nothing to suggest anything was amiss except a huge slice out of the side of the tent which either allowed something or someone to enter, or maybe to leave. The slice was not on the side of the tent with the entrance, though — as if whomever or whatever made the slice couldn’t take the time to unfasten the straps holding the entrance closed. Theories ranged from space invaders to the Russian government trying to cover something up — had the students seen something they shouldn’t? The latter theory is even more compelling when you consider the authorities’ reluctance to commence a search for the students until there was no way to avoid it, the fact that the students’ hiking plan, which should have been filed in the school’s office, was nowhere to be found, and the fact that the authorities were insisting to the bereaved families that the students’ bodies not be returned to their home cities but be buried where they fell on the mountain.

This author becomes very interested — one might say obsessed — with finding the truth of what happened to these kids, and he throws himself into a thorough investigation. His narration goes back and forth between 1959 and the present, but it is very well done — not choppy or disconnected. His conclusion is — well — wow. That’s all I’ll say, I don’t want to ruin a good read for you all! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who (a) admires adventurers like these students clearly were, and (b) loves a good mystery.
