This is a remarkably good novel, particularly for a debut. It is complex and multi-layered, with rich settings and well-developed characters that you want to know. Haley is a young woman in a small town in Louisiana who has a friend, Tiffany, who goes missing. The central plot is about the search for Tiffany, and then others who go missing, trying to find out who the culprit is.
The more interesting elements of the novel are Haley’s personal relationships, and those of others in the town whose lives are touched by the plot. Haley’s relationship with her boyfriend, Mac, is strained, and gets worse. She watches as her sister, Becky, becomes increasingly involved with a boy who is teaching her about things that might be better unlearned until she’s older.
Other stories are interwoven: Erica, whose mother left her and who lives with her loathsome father, begins writing a novel about Tiffany’s disappearance; Rachel is tormented about her husband’s affair with Tiffany; and a dark personality who is raising his little sister is a disturbed presence in the town.
All this is written with lyrical prose and set against atmospheric descriptions. This is fine writing.

Since graduating from Old Dominion University with a BS in health sciences and a minor in management, Jennifer Jaynes has made her living as a content manager, webmaster, news publisher, editor, and copywriter.
Her first novel, Never Smile at Strangers, quickly found an audience and, in 2014, became a USA Today bestseller. Its sequel, Ugly Young Thing, will be published in early 2015.
